Problems with starting in the wind?Mar 05, 2010 I always have a little fine steel wool in the pack with this, scrape off a little magnesium into the steel wool and spark it.starts fast
Learned that trick in boy scouts back when I was a pup and wasn't allowed to play with matches,
Burnt down ½ the garage and was the only kid in the neighborhood that wasn't allowed to play with steel wool.
Trust me, works great, same as they have for decades.the price is a little high
Like anything you should try it before you need it (just don't do it in the garage)
Works as seen on SurvivormanFeb 12, 2010 Very effective for starting a campfire. Be sure to have all your kindling in place since it burns fast.
A Must Have!Feb 10, 2010 this is with out a doubt a great item! I keep it on my key chain for a backup fire starter.
$ 6.88 at wallmartFeb 06, 2010 Haven't used it, but shopping around, and found one at wallmart, so I'll save it on shiping. But going to buy the sweedish one too, seems more reliable.
Put It In Your Backpack!Jan 30, 2010 It's Winter in Wisconsin, so I didn't go out in the cold and snow to try it out to make a fire. But I did (carefully in a metal pan) start a small piece of kleenex on fire in our basement so I know it works, and works easily and beautifully. It's one of those items that I bought and will almost definitely never need, yet if I ever do get caught out overnight while doing a hike somewhere, I know I will not be without fire. I put it with other emergency pieces inside my backpack with a small cheap pocket knife (you need this to create the spark)and that's where I will leave it except for "play" fire starting (like to impress friends in an outdoor fire pit), or when it's needed for the real thing.
How can you claim to be a hiker/adventurer if you can't make a fire without a lighter or matches?!!!
