5Versatile, Rugged and OrganizedSep 21, 2009
The Maxpedition M-1 Waistpack is a great way to get loose items out of your pocket and into an organized carry pouch that is secure and accessible.

The M-1 is compartmentalized into two areas. The outer pocket is covered by a flap secured by a generous strip of Velcro and backed up with an adjustable Fastex buckle. This pocket has a single accordion fold which allows it to expand outward from nearly flat to about 3 inches. An adjustable elastic compression strap on the outside ensures the accordion fold stays tidy and a couple of light colored internal dividers ensure the contents don't bang against each other. The flap also includes a zippered pocket on the outside suitable for a couple of folded bills. The larger inner pocket is zippered around 60% of its perimeter so it's really easy to access all of the contents when the zipper is fully open. Like the front pocket, the inner pocket has a couple of light colored dividers to improve visibility of the contents as well as to prevent things from bumping against each other.

Quite a bit can be put into the M-1 without straining its capacity. In the inner pocket I can easily fit a Blackberry Storm, Motorola RAZR, an aluminum LED flashlight, a Cold Steel Recon 4" folding knife and .45 magazine. The outer pocket usually holds some business cards, and a GPS tracker. Of course this is not something you wear if concealment is a concern as empty it would still make a noticeable bulge under most any shirt but under a loose jacket my regular loadout is manageable.

The back of the M-1 has a full width (almost 3.5") belt loop, capable of accommodating a 3" belt. The back of the belt loop is covered in PALS webbing which makes it compatible with other Maxpedition equipment and MOLLE webbing too, with the right adapters. Hidden in the webbing is yet another pocket, 2.75" wide and 2.5" deep, suitable for a spare handcuff key.

I like to use the M-1 when I travel. It's small enough to wear on a plane (replace knife and magazine with iPod, of course) to keep stuff out of your pockets and accessible. When it's not on my belt, I use the Velcro flap to quickly wrap around the shoulder strap of my carry bag (faster than playing with the PALS webbing). The only complaint I have is that the Velcro is noisy. There's no way to lift the flap without announcing the fact to everyone within 10 yards. Like other Maxpedition products, the M-1 is built to be used and abused. The material is stiff when new but becomes more pliable as it breaks in.

If you're looking for a versatile, compact and rugged waistpack that will organize and protect your stuff, consider the Expedition M-1 Waistpack. It may not be the cheapest waistpack available but consider the value of what you put inside.
